The People Here
What attracted you to CCDP?
Location initially, but also the music, liturgy, preaching and community - still the reasons now that we live further away.
How are you engaged in the parish right now and why?
A regular parishioner, financial supporter and occassional reader. I very much enjoy being able to attend regularly when I am not travelling and appreciate all the work, by clergy, organist and choir, lay readers and other volunteers in the service, management and staff that makes the CCDP service(s) happen.
How did you come to worship in the Anglican Church?
I have worshipped in the Anglican Church since growing up in the Ottawa Valley and Markham. Leanne and I attended Trinity College, University of Toronto and were married in the chapel there 33 years ago.
What do you think is the most compelling thing about Christianity?
That God so loved the world, that he transformed it through his son's perfect example of the two great commandments. The first and great commandment reminds us that, while we all possess the divine "spark" and are "perfectable", we are not the masters of the universe and especially not of other people. The commandment "to love our neighbour as ourselves" underlies all economic and political progress in this world and ensures the vitality of our faith as we draw the circle of "neighbours" wider through the centuries.
Do your friends and colleagues know that you go to church? Why or why not?
Yes -for a few reasons. I speak of my faith in presentations to colleagues and friends in respect of charitable causes/fundraising such as our annual United Way campaign in the workplace. Also, my friends notice that during March and April, when we out for dinner, that I am not enjoying my usual Manhattans/glass of wine/coffee which provides a "Lenten" conversation starter.
What would it surprise most people to know about you?
Perhaps my fellow parishioners at CCDP would be surprised that I am an occassional, but relatively good poker player (check out the World Series of Poker (WSOP) web-site) and possibly my competitors in the WSOP would be surprised that I am a parishioner at CCDP!
