We are Hiring a Part-time Bookkeeper

This is a joint hire between Christ Church Deer Park and Grace Church-on-the-Hill

Introduction

Christ Church Deer Park, an Anglian church located at 1570 Yonge Street – near the Yonge Street and St. Clair West intersection, and Grace Church on-the Hill, an Anglican church located at 300 Lonsdale Road – near the Spadina Road and St. Clair West intersection, are each looking for a part-time Bookkeeper for an aggregate between the two Churches of four days per week.

Christ Church Deer Park and Grace Church on-the-Hill have joined together in this job posting in the hope that by offering the positions of Bookkeeper at each Church together for an aggregate of four days per week, the positions would be of interest to applicants. The intention would be that each of Christ Church Deer Park and Grace Church on-the-Hill would contract separately for their respective Bookkeeper positions and that the successful candidate would be an independent contractor under such arrangements. The specific days allocated to each Church would be determined as part of the process but something like Monday and Wednesday in-person at one Church and Tuesday and Thursday in-person at the other Church. 

Bookkeeper Role

The role of the Bookkeeper is to provide bookkeeping support for the finances of each
Church. The successful candidate will have strong bookkeeping skills, organizational abilities, excellent communication skills, be trustworthy, and comfortable working both
independently and collaboratively as part of a small, collegial team.

Position Summary:

To provide bookkeeping support for each Church, respectively.

Supervision and Support:
In the case of Christ Church Deer Park, this position reports to and works closely with the Director of Parish Operations; and in the case of Grace Church on-the Hill,  this position reports to and works closely with the Director of Finance, in each case, under the final authority of the Rector/Priest-in-Charge and the Church Wardens.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • All aspects related to accounts payable
  • All aspects related to accounts receivable, including processing the various forms of donation received by the Church
  • Assist the Director of Parish Operations (in the case of Christ Church Deer Park) or Director of Finance (in the case of Grace Church on-the Hill) with payroll
  • Maintain the computerized bookkeeping system (currently PowerChurch) of the Church and make weekly postings in a timely manner
  • Provide bookkeeping support to the Director of Parish Operations (in the case of Christ Church Deer Park) or Director of Finance (in the case of Grace Church on-the Hill), and, for each Church respectively, the Treasurer and Church Wardens as well as committees
  • Assist the Wardens with preparation of the annual parochial return for the Diocese
  • Monthly reconciliation of all accounts and bank accounts
  • Provide monthly financial reports to the Director of Parish Operations (in the case of Christ Church Deer Park) or Director of Finance (in the case of Grace Church on-the Hill) and the Treasurer of the respective Church
  • Prepare information for the independent auditor as required for the financial year end audit
  • Maintain credit card and pre-authorized payments
  • Respond to inquiries from parishioners related to donations
  • Issue charitable donation receipts
  • Assist with counting offertory giving and bank deposits
  • Other duties as may be assigned

 Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in finance and bookkeeping and supporting a dynamic staff team and an active Parish
  • Training and work experience with bookkeeping, preferably in the not-for-profit sector and with fund accounting
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with accounting systems (working knowledge of PowerChurch is an asset), Google Workspace and spreadsheets, including Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong written and spoken English communications skills

Note: The successful applicant will be required to complete a background and police check.

Terms:

  • Independent contractor – agreement between each Church and the successful candidate based on a competitive hourly amount depending on skills, experience and assigned duties
  • 16 hours per week for each Church, with additional hours required at busy times of the year (e.g. December – March)
  • Start Date:     Grace Church on-the Hill – as soon as possible; Christ Church Deer Park – ideally early February 2025

The Story behind our

Tracker Organ

Our magnificent three manual, tracker-action organ was installed in the chancel of the church in the spring of 1982 and dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of those who died in the First World War and the Second World War.

The organ, built by the Karl Wilhelm Company of Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec, has a classical continental design. The case is made of white oak and the pipe shades are of carved butternut. Voiced in the classic French style, its 36 stops and 50 ranks are capable of interpreting a wide variety of organ literature.

Installation required considerable changes to the chancel including moving the altar forward and arranging choir seating to either side. These renovations prompted the design and production of our award-winning Benedicite Kneelers, done in needlepoint by a dedicated group of church members.
